SEMINAR

" Coastal Range of the Los Lagos Xth Region: A Vision for the Future Based on a Unique Cultural and Natural Heritage"

The Coastal Range is a sub-region that involves a major part of the Los Lagos Region's territory. Know worldwide for its biological relevance (included among the 25 hot spots for conservation), it has been scarcely intervened and is mostly unknown at the national level.
Large areas of the Coastal Range are still kept in a relatively virgin condition. However, they are currently facing actual threats of degradation and loss, which has been the case in the regions located to the north. Pressure over these areas, ecosystems and their population will increase dramatically if no appropriate land planning is carried out prior to any intervention. In addition to degradation, valuable development opportunities will be irremediably lost for the local communities. These opportunities are based on precious natural and cultural assets still untapped by several relevant stakeholders at the national, regional and local level.

The Coalition for the Conservation of the Coastal Range (Coalición para la Conservación de la Cordillera de la Costa, CCCC) and its member organizations, have undertaken the challenge of disseminating the environmental and cultural assets of the area. Simultaneously, the CCCC is devoted to the support and promotion of proposals and initiatives, which based on the area's potential, can help the local population to accomplish an improved and sustainable quality of living. The proposals and initiatives include among others, guidelines for land use plans, promotion of ecotourism activities and private conservation.

This seminar is specially devoted to the members of local coastal municipalities, which includes Mayors, members of the Municipal Council, members of the Environmental and Municipal Development Units, and the general public. The Municipal Governments are the agencies specifically responsible for the land use management of the area referred to above. In addition, they are a guarantee for the decentralization and actual participation of the local communities in the decision making processes regarding such areas.

The role to be met by local governments in terms of the potential and value of their applicable territories is also crucial to ensure an efficient use of public and private resources, all of which should be consistent with a vision defined and shared by the local community at large.

Several specialist will participate in the Seminar, which will address different aspects regarding land use planning with an emphasis in the preservation of a unique natural and cultural heritage. Undoubtedly, the applicable presentations will provide useful strategies and tools for all the attendees.

Goals:

· Disseminate the relevance of the Xth Region's Coastal Range sub-region among local stakeholders, especially among the members of the areas' municipalities.
· Provide tools and information to the different municipalities, referred to the benefits that can result from the appropriate planning of land use management.
· Learn from the experience of foreign local governments in terms of sustainable land management.
· Disseminate experiences of sustainable development currently underway in the area.
· Disseminate the opportunities for the promotion and funding of conservation and sustainable development projects.
· Promote partnerships among the different municipalities of the Coastal Range, so as to benefit from the area's potential.
· Explore international links to promote the area's attractions and potentials.
· Provide background information to enrich the regional debate regarding larger-size projects, land interventions and public investment in the area, promoting sustainable development and the quality of living of the local communities.
