MAPU LAHUAL NETWORK OF PROTECTED AREAS

The Mapu Lahual Network of Protected Areas in the coastal region south of Osorno, Chile aims to protect the native forests of alerce and olivillo that belong to the area´s indigenous communities. The local communities have created this ecological reserve in order to ensure the sustainable use of their natural resources and landscapes.

From Osorno, tourists can travel by paved road to Maicolpue, 65 km. away. From there, they can access all of the protected areas and communities in the Mapu Lahual network by trekking or horseback riding arranged by local guides. The project includes the development of 4 different centers for environmental and cultural education, built in the octagonal style of a traditional Huilliche house and made from native alerce wood.

Economic Impact

The project will increase the resources of families in the local communities by diversifying their economic base to include ethnotourism and ecotourism. In addition, the families and community will maintain the value of their forest resources for the long term as a sustainable resource. This will allow them to maintain their way of life and give others the opportunity to visit this magnificent natural resource.

Social and Cultural Impact

The project will maintain the traditional relationship that the Huilliche people have had with their forest by relying on their participation and directly benefiting them. In addition, the project will educate people in surrounding areas and tourists about the importance of protecting the cultural and natural heritage of the region.

Environmental Impact

The project will protect the Valdivian temperate coastal rainforest and focus on conservation of the highly threatened, rare, and biologically valuable Alerce and Coastal Olivillo forests.
